Biomimicry Institute

Creating Nature Inspired Innovation for the World

The Biomimicry Institute empowers people to create nature-inspired solutions for a healthy planet. The purpose of the Biomimicry Institute is to naturalize biomimicry in the culture by promoting the transfer of ideas, designs, and strategies from biology to sustainable human systems design.

The Biomimicry Institute’s goal is for biomimicry to become a natural part of the design process. They accomplish this by tackling one sustainability problem at a time through the Design Challenges platform, mobilizing tens of thousands of practitioners with the support of the Global Biomimicry Network to solve the challenge, and then providing those practitioners with AskNature as a tool to begin the solution process. They anticipate dozens of new biomimetic innovations will result, creating a healthier world for all.

Biomimicry Global Challenge

The Biomimicry Global Design Challenge is a competition hosted by the Biomimicry Institute and the Ray C. Anderson Foundation that brings nature-inspired solutions to real-world problems and teaches biomimicry in the process. We recently launched the 2016 Biomimicry Global Design Challenge, open to both students and professionals worldwide. We are challenging people to use biomimicry – an approach to innovation that taps into nature’s time-tested designs and processes in order to solve human-scale problems – to design a better, healthier food system. Participants will have access to biomimicry resources and mentorship, as well as a chance to compete for the Ray C. Anderson Foundation $100,000 “Ray of Hope” Prize.
